The Pronouns  этот (this) and тот (that)

In nominative case the pronoun этот and тот have the following forms depending on the gender and number of the noun it qualifies:

 

этот/тот this/that (qualifying masculine noun)

эта/та this/that (qualifying feminine noun)

это/то this/that (qualifying neuter noun)

эти/те these/those (Plural noun )

 

Этот институт новый. Тот институт тоже новый.

This institute is new. That institute is also new.

 

Эта школа новая. Та школа тоже новая.

This school is new. That school is also new.

 

Это общежитие новое. То общежитие тоже новое.

This hostel is new. That hostel is also new.

 

Эти институты  новые. Те институты тоже новые.

These institutes are new. Those institutes are also new.

 

Question words used for putting question to

этот and тот is Какой... ?

 

When used attributively, the pronoun этот/тот, эта/та, это/то, эти/те answer the questions какой?, какая?, какде?, какие? what?

Какой институт?

Which institute?

Inanimate

 

Demonstrative pronoun эти/те and interrogative word какие qualifying inanimate plural nouns of all the three genders. DO not decline.

These/Those books, magazines and letters are ours.

Dative Case

Pronoun этот /тот declines as follows:

Use of the Demonstrative pronoun этот

 

The pronoun этот, эта, это, эти this, these may fulfill various functions in the sentence. When used attributively, the pronoun этот, эта, это, эти answers the question какой?, какая?, какде?, какие? what?

 

Какой парк? - Этот парк.

What park?-This park.

 

Какая страна? Эта страна.

Which country? -This country.

The neuter form это (it is) the only form used as the subject.

Это used as the subject denotes a person or object and does not change according to gender or number.

На улице стоит большое здание с колоннами. Это здание  музей

There is a big building with colums in the street. This building is a museum.

 

В музей вошли туристы. Это туристы из России.

Some tourists entered the museum. These tourists are from Russia.

 

The link verb быть is used in the past and the future. It agrees in gender and number not with the pronoun это but with the noun which is part of the predicate.

 

Это был парк.

This was a park.

 

Это была учительница в школе.

She was a teacher in the school.

 

Это были студенты.

They were students.

 

Это будет новый институт.

It will be a new institute.

 

Compare the following sentence pairs.

Этот дом - дом отдыха.       

This house is a rest-home.

 

In the above sentence the pronouns этот is an attribute and agrees with the noun it qualifies.

Это дом отдыха.

This is a resthome.

 

In the above sentence the pronoun это is the subject and does not agree with any noun.

Эта девушка - сестра моего мужа.

This girl is my husband’s sister.

 

In the above sentence the pronouns Эта is an attribute and agrees with the noun it qualifies.

She is my husband’s sister.

 

In the above sentence the pronoun Это is the subject and does not agree with any noun.

Эти книги - романы.

These books are novels.

 

In the above sentence the pronouns Эти is an attribute and agrees with the noun it qualifies.

In the above sentence the pronoun Это is the subject and does not agree with any noun.

 

Both the types of sentences are synonymous. The pronoun это fulfilling the function of the subject may stand not only for a word, but also for a whole statement. In this case the predicate verb or adjective agrees with это, i.e. it takes the neuter singular:

Мальчик долго не возвращался. Это беспокоило мать.

The boy had not come back for a long time. It made his mother anxious.

 

Профессор обещал помочь нам. Это хорошо.

The professor promised to help us. That is very good.

 

When the pronoun это fulfils the function of an object it refers to the whole of the preceding statement and it is used as a noun.

Начинаются  каникулы. Ученники радуются этому.

The vacation is beginning. The students are glad of that.
