Interrogative pronoun чей? whose?

 

Чей is the interrogative word used to put question to possessive pronoun. Чей also changes according to the gender and number of the noun it qualifies. It also has four forms according to the gender and number.

Чей for masculine noun

Чей это брат?

Whose brother is that?

 

Это мой дом.

This is my house

 

Here чей is used as it refers to masculine gender noun – брат. 

Чья for feminine noun.

 

Чья это сестра?

Whose sister is that?

 

Here Чья is used as it refers to feminine gender noun – сестра.

Это моя сестра.

This is my sister.

 

Чьё  for neuter noun.

Чьё это письмо?

Whose letter is this?

 

Это моё письмо.

This is my letter.

 

Here Чьё is used as the noun it refers to neuter gender – письмо.

Here Чьи  is used as it refers to plural nouns- брат и сестра.
