кто? and что? are the interrogative words used to put questions to the nouns in the nominative case.

 

1. кто and что  are used to put question. кто for human being or animals and что for any non living object.

 

Это Максим. Кто это?

This is Maxim. Who is that?

 

Это слон. Кто это?

This is an elephant. Who is that?

 

Это стол. Что это?

2. кто and что  are used to put question to any person or thing belonging to any category.

Кто такой Максим? Максим студент.

What is Maxim? Maxim is a student.

 

Что такое роза? Роза цветок.

What is Rose?  Rose is a flower.

 

3.  кто and что  are used to put question to any person or thing performing any action or remaining in any state.

Максим читает книгу.  Кто читает книгу?

Maxim is reading book. Who is reading book?

 

Карта висит на стене. Что висит на стене?

The map is hanging on the wall. What is hanging on the wall?
