Preposition через

через (across, over)

The preposition через is used to denote an action directed from one side of an object to the other.

Пешеход идёт через улицу.  

The pedestrian is going across the street.

 

Через реку мы переплыли на лодке.

We crossed the river by boat.

 

In such cases verbs frequently have the prefix

 

пере- (перейти через улицу

to go across the street

 

переплыть через реку

to swim across the river

 

перепрыгнуть через ручей

to jump over the brook)

 

However, phrases consisting of the above verbs followed by nouns in the accusative without a preposition also have the same meaning

перейти улицу to go across the street

переплыть реку to swim across the river

 

Через is used with a meaning very close to that of the preposition сквозь through

Мы пробирались через непроходимую чащу леса.

We were making our way through the impenetrable thicket

 

Мы пробирались сквозь непроходимую чащу леса.

We were making our way through the impenetrable thicket

 

Кровь просочилась через марлю.

Blood oozed through the gauze.

 

Кровь просочилась сквозь марлю

Blood oozed through the gauze.

 

Через may be used to denote a period of time and it answers the question когда? when?

Через год Максим вернётся в Россию.

Не will return to Russian a year.

 

Через минуту начнётся урок.    

The class will begin in a minute.

 

Я иду через час.

I will come within an hour.

 

Через is used with the meaning of through, by way of, by means of:

Дискуссия шла через переводчика.    

The discussion was conducted through an interpreter.

        

Объявления были даны через газёту    

The announcements were  made through a newspaper.
