Preposition несмотря на

несмотря на (in spite of)

The preposition несмотря на is used with noun in the accusative case and can be replaced  by the preposition вопреки (followed by the dative case)

 

Несмотря на все трудности Арун сдал все экзамены.

In spite of all the difficulties Arun passed all the exams. 

 

Несмотря на совет врача отдыхать больной начал работать.

In spite of the doctor's advice to take rest the patient started working.

 

However, the preposition несмотря на cannot always be replaced by вопреки. See the following the sentence:

Несмотря на морозы яблони-не погибли.

In spite of the frosts the apple trees did not perish

 

Note: несмотря cannot be replaced by вопреки as the latter is mainly used when a person is opposed by another's will or is confronted with difficulties to be overcome.
