The pronoun всякий (any, every, all sort of )

 

The definitive pronoun любой any (body) denotes one of a number of similar objects or persons.

 

Всякий  студент на моём месте отвечил бы так же.

Any student in my place would have acted the same way.

           

Всякий укажет вам дорогу на вокзал.

Anybody will show you the way to the railway station.

 

Here всякий  can be replaced by каждый

 

Каждый  студент на моём месте отвечил бы так же.

Any student in my place would have acted the same way.

        

Каждый укажет вам дорогу на вокзал.

Anybody will show you the way to the railway station.

 

Here всякий  can  also be replaced by  любой

 

Любой студент на моём месте отвечил бы так же.

The pronoun всякий is also used with the meaning all sorts of, various:

В нашей  реке водится всякая рыба.

There are all sorts of fish in our river.

 

Он читал всякие книги.

He read all sorts of books.

 

Он рассказывал всякие интерес­ные истории.

He  told  all  sorts of interesting stories.

 

In the above context всякий cannot be replaced by the pronoun каждый or любой.

In the sentence the pronouns всякий is used as attributes and agrees with the noun it qualifies in gender, number and case.

        

Что волки жадны, всякий знает.

Everyone knows that wolves are greedy.

 

This pronoun is declined in the same manner as adjectives.

The pronouns всякий is occasionally used as nouns and fulfill the function of the subject or object of the sentence.

 

У всякого был билет.

Everyone had a ticket.
