Formation of perfective verb from imperfective

There are no definite rules in Russian about the formation of perfective verb from imperfective or vice versa.  However, the general way is by adding prefix or suffix.

Formation of perfective verb from imperfective with the help of  prefixes:

 

1. по-

обедать-победать

Formation of perfective verb from imperfective by altering or replacing Suffix

1. Replacing the suffix -ать by -ить

встречать – встретить

to meet

 

2. Replacing the suffix -ять by -ить

объяснять – объяснить  

to explain

 

выполнть – выполнить

to complete/fulfill

 

3. Replacing the suffix ‘-ывать by -ать

опаздывать- опоздать

to be late

 

4. Replacing the suffix -ирать by -рать

убирать – убрать 

to clean/clear

 

5. Replacing the suffix -авать by -ать

давать-дать

to give

вставать – встать

to get up

 

6. Replacing the suffix -ывать by -ыть

закрывать – закрыть

to close

 

7. Replacing the suffix -нимать by -нять

принимать – принять  

to receice/to take medicine

Note:

The perfective pair of certain verbs is neither derived by adding prefix or altering suffix but from altogether different stem.
